If in Maya just create a poly spear grab a lattice deformer and sculpt your desired shape now change Poly from quads to triangles Harden the tri's edges.
Make a (Create>Sets>Quick Select Set) on these edges so you can select them quickly then Add Divisions now Harden edges once again grab out you sculpting brush and sculpt over the divided mesh should pull it out so it pretty much matches what you see there.
Add desired material to it. Render It.

Hope that helps.

1. In max, create 2 geo-spheres. Scale one in the x-axis and the other in the z-axis.
2. Convert both of them into "editable poly" objects.
3. Apply a mest smooth modifier with irritations value:2 & smoothness:1
4. Go in editable poly stack, activate edges & select all the edges of the geo-sphere
5. Extrude them: -height at a negative value , base width at a positive value.
(Just play between these 2 values tii you get the results you want)

*On forgot, if you prefer sculpting rather than scaling, use the paint-deformer tool in max available in the edit poly stack.

Here is just a rough result created in 3 mins

I know its not the same. I just roughly created it.
You need to later add a displacement map for the ballon effect

And then use the large colliding hadron with ATP enabled synchrosity and vector activational subscription support. Flux capacitor.

It was necessary for me to make a joke to keep my self esteem leveled out.

lol: I know I could of explained it more better, but I haven't the time too. I know when I explain things sometimes it sounds like a sci-fi mad scientist.

But I usually explain like some one has a decent grasp of the program lol. I Guess I should start asking the persons lvl of proficiency first, before I try to explain. That might help me bring it into more appropriate wording.

Take a look at this:

Links:

generative modelling, this is the best way to achive such a task.
As far as I know GEM is the only program of this kind that has a graphic interface (I mean, you actually see the model and and interact with it like any other modeller), other generative modelling softwares are based on equations, which means that u write down an equation and the model appears, no interactive modelling.

The bad news is that I never found a cracked version of GEM...
Should someone have a working copy of it I would be glad to grab it!

damn man , instructions you gave, make me want to test and figured it out how to make this model.

another way for me (noobs way) to that in Maya are ;

1.create > platonic solids
2.hit Smooth
3.Extrude (turn off the keep faces together)
4.hit smooth again to tighten up the edges.

voila.

Well the one thing you will learn in Maya is there are always more than one way to accomplish anything. I'm sure that goes for most of the true 3D packages.

Do it in Modo! it takes like seconds

1. create a sphere
2.in that 'sphere option' (left-down corner in modo interface) change 'sphere mode' from 'globe' to 'tesselation' and change 'subdivision level' to '6'

so you have hexagonal

3.double click on sphere in polygons mode and chose 'spikey' once or twice and subdivide all objest by pressing 'd' once or twice

so you have now pure hexagonal object with triangles beveled nicely smooth.

here's an example in attachement

ps.I wonder to see how to do this in rhino with t-splines...

oh and for your model you can use tesselation value '4', then watch

or

to easly add buttons/fasteners to that 'armchair'

and if you will not be happy of different triangle size&shapes after deforming that sphere you can always do a quick retopology to match all triangles without changing the overall shape it should be answered in all tutorials about 'constrain to...' like in 'Luxology Concept Car' or 'fast prototyping' tutorials...

good luck!

You could also do a displacement map for the bumps...
