Default unlimited detail technology - software revolution

Links:

WOW! that's kinda odd but really stunning idea of realtime engine
so many years of hardware war but this....forget polys and switch it with points......fucking DOTS! just it.....and its made in soft mode by CPU (no GPU...)
A'm I drunk or what?
It remainds me a little the Voxel technology from NovaLogic but I don't know if it has any connection with it

anyway it rocks

Hmm... usually if something seems too good to be true, it is.

I love the idea, but something just doesn't seem to be right about the videos and their website.

Until I see it rendering something an artist has made with over a billion polygons (then converted into point cloud data) in real time, then I'll keep my skepticism. (With my own eyes, not a video)

I say artist because they aren't artists, they are programmers, said so themselves.

I'll be honest, I can't tell that there is that much detail because the models and colors look like shit. And they need to get a better website, it seriously hurts my eyes.

I admit I share darktype's skepticism, but that doesn't mean I can's still be excited about this. I really hope my skepticism will be proven unfounded and that this technology really is the revolution we were all (without even knowing it) waiting for.
Still, you have to consider the limitations - so far, this doesn't seem to be adequate for displaying textured 3d objects (but, then again, considering the resolution of the models, when you consider they're made of points, maybe there won't be a need for today's standard texturing methods) and I don't see how this can produce effects like refraction, depth of field, motion blur, etc. (of course, these are mainly framebuffer effects and can be done by the video card separately using the frames generated by the unlimited detail technology).

And another thing worth considering is the fact that this could be a serious problem to nVIDIA and AMD/ATI - and I doubt those companies won't take measures to prevent something like this from killing their market.

I guess we'll have to wait and see how much of all this is true.
