Why zbrush why!!!!!
I think I've tried everything to get this to work.

I have a female nude that I am trying to model and it keeps crashing.

I have tried the following to fix it:

first my pc spec:

windows 7 x64 (but have also tried on the same machine windows 7 x86, windows xp 64)
i7 920 @ 2.67mhz
12gb triple channel ram
ati hd 5770 1 gb
113gb free space

The model is one single whole mesh with no open edges, (even the eye sockets are filled) it was originally at 27 million (i wanted good skin detail), but tried a lower subd (7 million) and it would still crash.

adjust undo and redo settings
moved compact mem from 256 - 4096
export the model, run stl checks and reimport
delete the lower sub division (and export - check - import)
lower my cpu core to 1 in windows task manager
delete the highter sub divison
delete the contents of the vram folder
tried zbrush 3.5r and 4

NO MATTER what I do it crashes at a random point.OH GOD THE DRUGS

I'm starting to think I need to change my graphics card, I know I know zbrush uses 99% of the cpu, but what else can I do?!!

If anyone could help me, I would love them forever!

upload the low res model as an obj

here ya go:

Try this -

Find the ZBrush process in the task manager.

Right click, 'Set Affinity' to use less CPUs. (try just 1 first)

See if that helps any.

CyberHype 09-16-2010 04:51 PM

Did u test ur system to check if Windows or some hardware are falty?

philion 09-16-2010 05:02 PM

Bobba_The_Hut: I've tried that, I mentioned it on the first post :)

CyberHype: I've ran different types of performance and stress test programs yes. Everything comes out fine. But, very rarely I do get bluescreen errors that are ati related. Which is one of the reasons I was thinking of switching to nvidia.

I've formatted and reinstalled windows, and also with zbrush when I import and export I have tried using things like "mrg", "weld", "Tri2quad".

Wall-e: I'm trying to crash this obj on subd 5 (nearly 7 million). And I cant get it to crash.....

I have also tried exporting and importing the lowest and highest subdivision and trying to start fresh. but eventually it'll crash. When I mean crash it could be in 30mins or 30 seconds. But once it crashes it crashes more frequently. Which has forced me in some cases to save my work every 30seconds. I'm at the stage where I feel fed up.

LOL... guys...its really quite simple... 1.. LOWER poly count dude... you do this by splitting the model up... your system just does not have enuf power to do this safely :) how to split up your model after you've done alot of detail.. well I don't know

Loudesbois 09-16-2010 05:09 PM

I got a similar issue once.
Zbrush kept crashing at some point.
And the problem didn't come from the CPU, configuration and tutti quanti, but from my Wacom tablet drivers, which were a bit old.
Did you update them, along those of your graphic card ?
Sometimes it might be as simple than that...
Anyway, if Zbrush only crashes with that particular female model, the problem probably comes from it and not from your configuration.

philion 09-16-2010 05:20 PM

bigdude: shit happens. I don't know if it is the poly count though. Because the model has crashed at 7 million aswell as 27 million.

Loudesbois: yea - all drivers are uptodate. I've gone to wacom and ati etc... :(

Weird, I cant crash the model Ive uploaded on subd5. What does that tell me? :/

CyberHOG 09-16-2010 05:31 PM

I rolled back my drivers to an earlier version 'ATI' and all was well

philion 09-16-2010 05:39 PM

CyberHOG: ok thanks, I'll give it a go. Do you know how far back you went?

Thanks for all your help though people! SO much nicer on here than zbrush central - I find them really snotty and thick. <:

Look like a memory problem, check the ram ,i recall a program memtest.

lindstorm 09-16-2010 06:03 PM

i've just checked your model, i think this is what cause the problem
you can try to fix that, and see if the problem still exist.

philion 09-16-2010 06:06 PM

Georgeivan: yea I have done already :(
lindstorm: ?

lindstorm 09-16-2010 06:07 PM

can you see the pic ?

philion 09-16-2010 06:09 PM

no :)

why do I think its going to be rude though :D

lindstorm 09-16-2010 06:11 PM

check the topology between the chest

arvmetal 09-16-2010 06:13 PM

Zbrush 4 is a buggy peace of crap I have the same problem I had to go back to 3.5. You should wait for 4.1 version or a patch.

philion 09-16-2010 06:16 PM

lindstorm: this?

philion 09-16-2010 06:19 PM

arvmetal: i'll be waiting forever though at this rate

philion 09-16-2010 06:24 PM

lindstorm: yea I see your point. It does need tidying up. I doubt its the cause of it crashing. But I will amend it :)

Not that I want to jinx it. but so far unistalling my graphic card drivers and just having "standard pci adapter" has fixed far :S

lindstorm 09-16-2010 06:27 PM

okay, hope you can find the sollution soon, cool model btw. been trying to make one myself :)

philion 09-16-2010 06:29 PM

hehe cheers it means alot :D

not a typical girly girl, shoulders bigger than the hips and all that. but its because shes a real person.

Wall-e 09-16-2010 07:29 PM

after looking at he obj, simply answer......the mesh is a mess. its got noobie written all over it. clean it up and start the sculpt again

philion 09-16-2010 07:39 PM

Wall-e: I will clear up the topology, but I'm pretty sure CyberHOG has sorted me out. I unistalled my ati drivers and everything is working just great :D

jone 09-16-2010 08:24 PM

Someone knows how to make the cavity and backface mask in the brush pallete work?
Zbrush 4 sucks.
