Default Oculus Rift Sold

Everyone saw this news buzzing this week about FB buying this company.

"Oculus VR may have won the headlines today by, you know, being acquired by Facebook for $2 billion. But last week it won the hearts and minds of the TED crowd. First, former NFL punter Chris Kluwe showed footage of a guy wearing an Oculus Rift headset and riding a virtual rollercoaster (video shown, bottom — jump to the 1:10 mark to watch things really get interesting). Kluwe, discussing the challenge of making sports more entertaining and engaging for spectators, asked the literal multi-million dollar question, “How do we make it more immersive?” His answer: “We take that next step by going to something called the Oculus Rift. This has been described as one of the most realistic virtual reality devices ever created. That is not empty hype.”"

What are your thoughts and how do you see this as an improvement?

If I remember correctly there was something similar to this but it didn't stick with people back then...

Well someone was going to buy Oculus, they didnt have funding and dollars to splash out.
Google or Microsoft ,but seems facebook got in first and covered the funding.Seen alot of post all day about it , i dont really care who got it at the end of the day NSA will be will be tracking your face now and your ass ,soo dont matter who got the pie first.

But i do think in the next 5 years they will be a ton of work for 3d arts and so on IF Oculus takes off. Company's will be throwing money at ppl to work for them. Oculus will drive ppl back to pc games and away from apps ,tablets and consoles.
So my betting is on AssFace to bring Oculus to every house hold cheap.

I honestly find it hard to justify Facebook's success. What has it really achieved?

Not that I'm on FB's side. But managing to get 500+mil users ( i know it more but many of those are dead accounts) buying whatsapp and now this.

If nothing is an achievement this purchase must be.

facebook, google both cia controlled fronts trying to buy up and corner the market on technology that could positively impact people's lives.

they won't just let anything hit the market. we don't have a true free market anymore, but a mafia market.

i'm sure facebook will overhaul the exciting new technology they purchased for something more tyrannical and disturbing like spying or facial recognition.

After watching Microsoft buy up productivity tools, Adobe and Corel buy up graphics apps, Autodesk buy up 3D modeling apps, and Google buy up internet apps, I guess it's FB's turn to become a giant monopoly. They already have the advantage of being EVIL, so this doesn't surprise me. The thing I'm wondering though is how they plan to use Rift. Do they just want to own it, and develop it further on its own, or is it part of some grand new "integrated product offering" they have planned? If so, what other companies are they looking at? Here are a couple they might take a run at soon:

They may also try to turn FB into an integrated online environment, like Google, by including more gaming content, and even Second Life like VR capabilities. I'm betting they're also on the lookout for the next massively popular online gaming trends, so that the next League of Legends belongs to them.

Or they may just flip Oculus, or gut it, like so many other big companies do. Only time will tell. Maybe I'll end up buying my VR goggles from Sony instead.
