Everything is non-destructive, just like photoshop, so you can go back and make changes afterwards through layers, masks, etc. This is a very expensive program used only by the biggest houses. Very few people know about it/ are good at it/have the patience to learn it/have the hardware to learn it/etc, so that puts you at an advantage if you master it. Hope all this helps. I'll give you some links that helped me decide to go with Mari when I was doing the same research u are doing now. I tried sending you links to sites that helped me make my decision to go with Mari but CGpersia won't allow me to send them. If u can send me your email address I'll send you those links which are very helpful, and I wish you all the best. Take care.

Okay, I am no pro, but I also started learning Mari 2.0v1 a month ago. I have a 570 ti card with 1.5 GB and everything works perfectly fine. It helps that I also have 32GB system memory and am running a 3770k Intel CPU. I have never used Mudbox, which I hear is excellent. I've used Zbrush polypaint, which doesnt come close because you are painting on the model and so you have to subdivide it more and more to get good resolution for your textures. Mari was designed by Weta digital when making Avatar because nothing out at the time, not even mudbox or bodypaint could handle the resolution of textures needed for the movie. Mudbox's limit is 8k. In Mari, you can go as high as 32k. I also love the paint buffer feature, which is kind of a canvas to paint your projection on, color correct, apply filters, procedural maps etc. then when it's perfect you can bake it onto your 3d model.
